Lei stessa si definisce "la teenager più vecchia del mondo": è Iris Barrel Apfel, di anni 89, ex interior designer e co-dirigente fino al 1992 insieme al marito della Old World Weavers (fabbrica tessile famosissima negli USA), nonché storica icona fashion. Dietro gli occhiali oversize (divenuti il suo marchio di fabbrica) si cela una donna di grandissima cultura ed esperienza, concreta e carismatica, capace di affascinare ed ispirare non solo tramite il suo stile "a volte barocco, altre zen", ma anche attraverso le sue parole: dotata un'(auto)ironia ed una semplicità uniche, è in grado di conquistarti da subito, complice il sorriso sempre presente sul suo viso.
Inutile dire che trovo questa donna bellissima: è dotata di una forza vitale assurda e, soprattutto, è ancora in grado alla sua età di stupirsi di fronte a ciò che le accade. Cosa che, ai giorni nostri e in persone ben più giovani di lei, è assai rara.
"The world’s oldest teenager”, that’s how Iris Barrel Apfel, aged 89, usually defines herself: she’s a former interior designer and she co-directed with her husband “Old World Weavers”, a very famous American textile firm, until 1992, but nowadays she’s mostly known because of her great sense of style and she’s considered a downtown fashion icon. Behind those oversized glasses (which have become her trademark) there’s a very cultured woman: she’s full of experience, she’s concrete, charismatic and she’s able to fascinate and inspire you not only through her style (which is “either very baroque or very zen”), but also through her words: she’s got unique (self-)irony and pragmatism and she can conquer you immediately, favoured by the constant smile on her face.
Needless to say that I find this woman just beautiful: she’s got such a great vital force and, most of all, despite her age she’s still able to marvel at what happens before her eyes. Something that is quite rare, especially nowadays even in far younger people.
Due mostre sono state allestite in suo onore, esponendo alcuni capi della sua meravigliosa collezione: la prima tenutasi nel 2005 presso il Metropolitan Museum of Art a New York (che ha ottenuto un successo a dir poco enorme) e la seconda nel 2009 presso il Peabody Essex Museum a Salem, nel Massachusetts.

Two exhibitions have been mounted in her honour, in which several items of her wonderful collection have been shown: the first one took place in 2005 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (and it obtained a huge success), while the second one was in 2009 at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
